This picture was for sale on Ebay recently. A picture d'epoque, as we say over here. In the picture we can see a 181 in service of the BGS (Border Guard in Germany) and some very though men! These cars were painted darkgreen and not kaki-green of the German landforce.
A 1974 stock 181 with minor trim changes. These cars were made in Mexico and sold in the US. Most of them had the blue stripes on a white surface, a few with pink stripes. The striking colorscheme and the surry top made this car very exotic. Not very useful in my country though...
Don't know where I found this picture... it was laying in the catacombs of my pc. It seems to be an emergency command vehicle. Notice the roofrack with speakers/sirens and lights. I have never seen another like that, so it must be a customjob. The picture is b/w but it would be safe to consider the color to be blue with black fenders (the colors of the THW).
Below a model in scale 1:43 from Minichamps:
This car served among others in the German Zivilschutz. This non-military organistation give assistance to people whenever a dissaster does happen. I doubt there is still a 181 in service, probably all dismissed. The car had almost the same gear as a Bundeswehr 181 (siren, rotating light, headlightprotection) but came in a nice orange jacket and black rims. On the door they put the name or flag of the unit they served in.
Not to offend my mother because it would be a sign of good taste. Too bad that Postversion was only available in Germany for postage delivery in the mountainous regions. I live between the highest hills of Flanders...and no luck for me: my postman is real Flandrien.
