Greetings from playas de San Agustin, Gran Canaria!
From a US sales brochure: a yellow Thing with black/white acapulco top. It is only a drawing, that colourscheme was never available.
From the 1973 Bundeswehr manual, the complete list of accessoiries:
An obscure picture of the 181 prototype. This was probaly the first assembled car. The doors had very straight angles, these were rounded off in the next series of pre-production. The sun visors in pre-production cars were often (if not always) white, in production these were always black.
Allthough on the back of this picture there is the date of 20 aug. 1970 stamped on, this car is clearly a pre-production car from 1968 or early 1969. There is no VW logo in the front, even the embossed base for the logo is missing. And clearly only one rib under the doors.
Nice action shot with a test car! Remark the license plate "WOB..." , typical for prototypes or test cars from Wolfsburg. This must be early procuction or even prototype because of the short rib above the front fender. I have never seen this on production line cars.
Hello there! A press release picture that shows the 181 in the production line shape from 1969 till 1973. With the long rib above the front fenders.
