From a US sales brochure: a yellow Thing with black/white acapulco top. It is only a drawing, that colourscheme was never available.
and yes... even a large numbers of pins were made.
Tan, orange and now the darkblue HW!
Some pictures from 181s in service... okay, not really action shots on manouvres but these cars were made for support, carrier or liaison duties.
From the 1973 Bundeswehr manual, the complete list of accessoiries:
An obscure picture of the 181 prototype. This was probaly the first assembled car. The doors had very straight angles, these were rounded off in the next series of pre-production. The sun visors in pre-production cars were often (if not always) white, in production these were always black.
Allthough on the back of this picture there is the date of 20 aug. 1970 stamped on, this car is clearly a pre-production car from 1968 or early 1969. There is no VW logo in the front, even the embossed base for the logo is missing. And clearly only one rib under the doors.
